Florida City

History Florida City is described as an old city by South Florida standards. Many northerners moved down to the region because a company called the Model Land Company from Michigan purchased a great deal of land in what is now Florida city and advertised heavily to attract residents. Many people came down from Michigan but conflicted with the locals that had already settled in the area and most of the northerns eventually moved back. The city was incorporated in 1914 and the remaining families named the town Florida City. The city has a mainly urban feel with the majority of residents living in Florida City apartments. Description Florida City is located in the far south of Florida underneath Miami. It is very close to the everglades which makes the climate warm and moist. The everglades are unique in the continental United States as a swampland home to many incredible animals such as the famous everglade alligator. This region is one of the most intimidating and interesting zones in the United States. Many travelers and tourists come to the everglades every year to see the wildlife and partake in the assortment of recreational activities available. Residents As of July 2008 the population of Florida City is almost 10,000. The population is much younger than the rest of Florida with the median age being 24.5 years as opposed to the 38.7 years which is the average of the state. The estimated median household income was $18,285. The estimated per capita income was $10,662. Rental Housing Florida City rentals make up the majority of housing situations in the city. Florida City apartment rentals make up the bulk of the population with a staggering 61% of the population renting an apartment. This is significantly above the state average which is 30%. Median contract rent in 2008 is $668 with the lower quartile being $431 and the upper quartile being $931 per month. The average amount of apartment rooms in Florida city is 3.7 rooms per apartment. Individuals living in Florida City apartments can enjoy a close proximity to one of the United States most famous wildlife regions. Fun Stuff The Everglades are the most important attraction near Florida City. Florida City is often called the gateway to the Everglades and the Keys. The Everglades National Park protects the bottom quarter of the Everglades. This park was put into place to protect the ecosystem of the Everglades which could very easily be damaged by a large amount of human interaction. The manatee, crocodiles, Florida panther, and a variety of birds are all creatures that are protected by the Everglades National Park. Visiting this park and observing the intense display of sub-tropical nature with all of its color and vibrant life is a great attraction to many people. Florida City has four city parks with recreational opportunities for residents. The Biscayne National Underwater Park and the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park are located in or nearby Florida City as well. Local attractions include the Coral Castle, the Everglades Alligator Farm, and the Homestead Motorsports Park and baseball stadium.
