Delray Beach

History

Originally named Linton, the town was part of Dade county until Palm Beach county was incorporated in 1911. It was originally settled by African-American, Bahamian, German, and Japanese agricultural homesteaders. The area began to grow and prosper when Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast railroad through Delray on the way to Miami.

Description

The city of Delray Beach occupies about 15 square miles, and is located in Palm Beach County, Florida. It is about a thirty minute drive to either Palm Beach Airport to the north and Fort Lauderdale Airport to the south. The historic US highway One which runs all along the east coast passes through the city. Interstate highway 95, also follows the same route. Slightly farther west of town is the Florida Turnpike. This toll road also runs north and south.

Delray Beach rental properties are a great way to enjoy living here, a beautiful city which has preserved it's old Florida heritage and combined it with new Florida amenities.

Residents

The population numbers about 75,000. Many residents are retirees, although there is a mix of all age groups. The Florida Atlantic University campus is in nearby Boca Raton, just south of Delray.

Rental Housing

Delray beach rentals run the gamut from cozy studio apartments to waterfront mansions. Studios are available around $700 to four bedroom townhouses over $2000 a month. Many Delray Beach condo rentals are available as owners will rent their units by the season or yearly.

Fun Stuff

The downtown area extends from Interstate 95 to the Atlantic ocean, and is centered around pedestrian-friendly Atlantic avenue, site of many upscale shops, restaurants, and art galleries. The city operates a free shuttle from the Tri-Rail station to all of downtown, making 22 stops. Kayak rentals are available.

The Delray Affair is a three art and street fair held every year. The Delray Beach Garlic Fest is a three day music, art, and food festival held every February. There is a friday night gallery walk every week throughout downtown.

Be sure to visit the Morikami museum and Japanese Gardens. The Old School Square Cultura Arts Center, which houses the Crest theater, is a popular place.
