History



Fort Lauderdale was home to the Tequesta Indians for more than 1000 years before it was taken over by Spanish explorers. Ownership of Fort Lauderdale went from Spain, to the United Kingdom, then United States and the Confederate States of America a few times. It was considered the New River Settlement before any real development was started on the land in the 20th century. The lands development did not take place until the 20th century, as it became the United States major Naval air station to radar operators and train pilots.
