Coconut Grove

History

Coconut Grove Miami was originally an independent town which was settled by British and Bahamian immigrants, plus northern homesteaders. This and the adjacent town of Silver Bluff were both annexed by Miami in 1925.
The Pan American World Airways seaplane base was based here in the 1930s, at the site of the present Dinner Key Marina and city hall. Historic Coconut Grove beachfront homes stand along Bayshore Drive. Peacock park is where it all started, when a British couple named Mr and Mrs Peacock arrived from the Bahamas and built the Peacock Inn, the first hotel in the area.
