Family and Your Move
Sunny days, beautiful beaches and a diverse population-it’s no wonder so many people love Miami and call this vibrant metropolitan area home. However, when you uproot a family – despite your amazing new rental – it is going to be quite the change and one that may be difficult for children to understand. Here are some useful tips to prepare your family for your exciting move:
- Try to tell your family (especially children) about the move as early as possible. Depending on the ages of your children, moving may involve many major changes to their daily lives such as changing school, meeting new friends, etc. It is best to ease them into this idea by talking about the new area, school district and activities that they will be able to take advantage of.
- Focus on the positive aspects of the move for the family. Focus on the unique aspects of Miami that you believe that your family will find most appealing.
- Maintain a positive attitude. Be upbeat and excited about your move to Miami. Good moods are infectious that will trickle down to your family and get everyone enthusiastic about the new change.
- Be prepared for negative comments and reactions and do not lose your cool when these opinions are voiced. Let your family express their feelings about the move and try not to turn this into an argument.
- Get your family involved with the move. Since there is so much to plan, having little helpers will be a huge off of anything from getting boxes to packing. Older kids can even call companies for moving quotes or storage facilities (should you need one).
- Most importantly, be honest about the feelings that your family members will have. Listen and be patient and reassure them you will be there to help them through the transition.
Moving can be very traumatic for a family and it is important to stick together and provide mutual support for each other during this transition. If you are empathetic of the life changes that everyone will face, it will make the entire process much easier to handle.
